Thameside Radio 90.2 |
The Thameside Radio 90.2 StoryThe Thameside Radio Story is about Thameside Radio 90.2: Thameside Radio was a pirate radio station that led a revolution. In the late 1970's the only national FM pop/rock station closed down at 7pm on Sundays. I was a teenager and 7pm symbolised the end of the weekend; no more music, time for a meal, school tomorrow, Saturday's party already becoming a faint memory. BBC Radio 1 had played the Top 30 and now they would hand over to Radio 2 who played the Mike Samms Signers - easy listening aimed at the over 60s. It was ghastly. It was with disbelief that I found - when I nudged the tuning dial at 7pm - that just next to Radio 1 was someone still playing proper music. Thameside Radio quickly caught my imagination and that of many other Londoners. We tuned to 90.2 VHF just before 7pm every Sunday to catch the warm up music, the Thameside theme tune, the "Do you ever have difficulty finding a radio station playing music" jingle and then Thameside Radio who played our music. In addition to the music there were listeners' letters, quizzes and a growing number of events. The station also gradually changed to reflect our chaning interests and the changing times. While it is true that Thameside Radio was a pirate radio station they never behaved like one. They would always be on air at the right time, the signal wasn't hard to receive, any radio could get it, the sound quality was excellent and the Thameside DJs had a friendly but professional approach. This is the story of Thameside Radio 90.2, the best radio station in London. Next: Thameside Radio, the early days >
